Chapter Six
Sienna nearly tripped up the steps leading back to the deck when she caught sight of Max wearing that bandana and looking all sexy pirate behind the boatâs wheel. An easy smile spread across his lips as she neared him.
He reached out a hand and tugged on the bill of her Red Sox cap. âAre you a fan?â
âHave to be,â she said. âThey kick you out of Boston if youâre not.â This was a moment where Max could either score oodles of points or be completely disqualified. She drew in a breath, then asked, âAre you a fan?â
âAbsolutely. I like hockey and my Bruins better, but I follow the Red Sox too.â Max started the small engine of the sailboat and gestured for Sienna to untie them from the dock.
âTwo players live on my street. Nice guys. Iâve talked to them at a dog park in the neighborhood.â She tossed the line to the dock as Max pulled into the bay.
âWhat kind of dog?â he asked.
âA Dalmatian. Her name is Dottie.â Sienna sat near Max, suddenly missing that dog and all her spots. Dottie was no doubt having a ball staying with Shaylee and Dax. âYou have any pets?â Every guy she had dated previouslyâand there hadnât been many who fell into the âseriousâ categoryâhad owned animals.
Except for Skip.
Sheâd asked him why he didnât have a dog or a cat or even a fish.
âPets are messy and needy. They ruin things,â heâd said. And that had been the end of that conversation.
Had Dottie soiled area rugs when she was a pup? Yes. Had she eaten part of the first step leading to the second floor of Siennaâs condo? Also yes. Was the wood floor in the upstairs hallway scuffed and scratched from Dottieâs claws? Affirmative.
Would Sienna give Dottie away to have her pristine home back?
Nope.
That dog had given Sienna her undivided attention, gotten her on a regular exercise routine, helped her meet some great friends in Boston, including Shaylee and her Shiba Inu, Lexi, and then there were the unlimited supply of warm, sloshy doggie kisses. Sienna wouldnât give any of those up.
âIâm actually between dogs at the moment.â Max tugged Sienna to her feet and positioned her behind the wheel. âKeep her right here for a minute.â He hopped to the mainmast and unfastened the ties on the mainsail.
Sienna did as instructed, but got distracted by the way the muscles in Maxâs arms, shoulders, and back flexed as he unfurled the mainsail. With each pull on the line, her mouth dropped open a little more until she caught herself and pressed her lips together.
He is not the first attractive man youâve seen, moron.
Why did Max have this effect on her? And what would she do tomorrow when she had to leave Saint Martin? This... thing they were doing was neatly bound by the borders of being at Super Con. Once they hit the real world again, though their homes were close enough, they couldnât be more than acquaintances. She had Skip waiting and her fatherâs adamant insistence that she marry him.
